Money Matters -

  • The official name of the Chinese currency is renminbi (RMB), but is often named "yuan" or "kwai". The abbreviated written symbol for RMB is 锟?/SPAN>. Generally speaking the largest denomination seen in daily life is the 100 yuan note, although larger denominations are available there are usually only seen in business transactions. Notes come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. You are advised to change only as much money as you need into RMB. Keep all of your receipts from any money exchanges you make.

  • Exchanging Money

Banks give the best exchange rate. Although you will find places to change money in airports, train stations and hotels they will not offer the best value for your money.

    Acceptable Foreign Credit Cards

Most major credit cards (Visa, American Express etc) are widely accepted in China. Don't expect the same amount of businesses to accept your credit cards but many hotels, international retailers, restaurants and supermarkets will have the facilities to take electronic payments.
